My Games

I started playing video games in 1994 as a kid with a NES & SNES in the household. These are the commercially developed ones that influenced and inspired me the most. I've tried to list them in the same order I experienced playing them: The top is early childhood, the bottom is likely sometime this year.

Donkey Kong Country SNES
112_dkc_ow.png The first Nintendo game I ever played. The 3D'ness was freaky to me and that you could control the characters by pressing buttons on a thing. When DK dies and Diddy starts blinking, I had no idea what it meant or what to do, and usually turned off the game because it was too weird of an experience already. Didn't realize I was choosing 2 player all the time, or that 1 player didn't mean only having DK, but a 2nd chance in the form of Diddy.
Super Mario Bros. 3 NES
112_smb3_world1.png Years ago I could get as far as world 8-2. Now I find anything after world 3 too difficult. I was fascinated by each world having its own theme. That was the first time I saw that kind of level of design in a game. The sun enemy was very distressing, as was each middle castle level.
Cobra Triangle NES
112_cobratriangle.png This game taught me to throw my controller in frustration and curse under my breath. My favorite video game composer David Wise worked on the music, though I didn't know that at the time. Sometime in the future I want to develop a Cobra Triangle fangame in 3D.
Super Metroid SNES
112_supermetroid.gif My earliest memory of the game is jumping into Samus' ship and wondering what was meant by "Would you like to save?" and being scared of the Tourian elevator room. I used to draw maps on A4 paper and tape them together with a cutout Samus "designing" my own rooms. Later I discovered Game Maker 4.3 and have made almost 7 fangames since then. My excitement for the franchise grew upon seeing Metroid Fusion on a friend's PC; when I learned of game ROMS.
Descent II PC
112_descent2.png First 3D game. First joystick. First uncanny spacial experience. I tried to avoid exploring unless I was upright at all times... which was generally impossible since the game sometimes required you to navigate upside down and sideways competently. For me, the guide-bot was to Descent II what the companion cube was to Portal, but for almost every level.
Donkey Kong Country 2 SNES
112_dkc2_hot.png I snuck downstairs 4:00 am Christmas morning to find this in my stocking, which I played until daybreak. I owned Donkey Kong Country for two years, and knew this game improved upon the first in every way. I found Music Test by chance, and became a fan of the OST, which I looked up online much later and learned of David Wise by name.
Duke Nukem 3D PC
112_duke3d_alnkik.png The "kill me" woman in the movie theater vent really creeped me out. The enemies I hated most were the egg hatched face huggers and those tall guys who shot bullets that could shrink you. My favorite level was the shopping mall, which featured a veterinary clinic and a hamburger place joined together by an underground tunnel. Duke Level Editor started my journey into modding.
Roller Coaster Tycoon PC
112_rollercoastertycoon.png The first build-up micromanagement strategy game I ever played. There's a lot to like... I felt horrible the first time I caused an accident on purpose. A roller coaster train crashed on a ferris wheel so even the music stopped dramatically. Does anyone else here the sound effects for the crowd shouting "Horizontal link!" every so often? What is with that??
Mario Game & Watch Gallery 2 GBC
112_gwgallery2_parachute.png Got this as a present for my sister's birthday at Balsam Lake Resort. Lost it within that same week, or the following year at the same resort before we left... The difficulty was just enough to keep me interested, but I recall the classic versions bugged me for being to old looking.
Pokemon Red GBC
112_pokemon_red.gif I started with Bulbasaur, captured less than 12 Pokemon, and carried highly evolved forms of my starter team well into the elite four. I also enjoyed Pokemon Gold even longer, but lost interest in Pokemon for a few years, before discovering NetBattle and the 3rd generation Pokemon. Playing against people online showed my just how smart the battle system could be. I still have Pokemon cards from grade 5 and a bunch of those small figurines boxed up somewhere.
Ocarina of Time N64
112_ocarinaoftime.png I got nostaligic about parts of the game that were presently out of reach or done with. Continuing on really rewarded me with the feeling of maturing and growing as a character. Ocarina of Time was more engaging than real life my first of many runs through. The day and night cycle, future world, and dungeon designs were very mysterious and memorable.
Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge PC
112_ra2yr_morush.png A friend let me borrow his soviet disk one summer. This was when I got into online gaming, and made BlackMita my internet alias. I later bought YR myself and started to get into modding. The left-pic is from a great mod called Mental Omega. If one could easily differentiate who does or doesn't have the mod online, it could be more fun and balanced than the original game.
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter N64
112_turok_dinos.png I rented this first and then bought it, using cheats almost all the time. I partly liked the meta-game of having all the levels and weapons available more than the actual game, which I'm still unclear about how to beat. "NTHGTHDGDCRTDTRK" is hard wired into my brain. I'm also very fond of the over-the-top strength of the last two weapons in the game.
Perfect Dark N64
112_perfectdark.png The spiritual successor to Goldeneye; more challenging missions, actual voice acting, and everything about multiplayer was an improvement twice over: custom player accounts, score based unlockings, simbots with customizable difficulty and play style, a ridiculous amount of weapons, and those awesome end-game stat awards. Great music too.
Return To Castle Wolfenstein PC
112_returntowolf.png I got as far as the forest base level before using cheats, so I played the first crypt levels proper, and remember wishing the Nazi's would team up with me... The fire zombies were even harder than the defiled church boss imo: You just shot him around a corner the whole time... though his projectiles were terrifying! Even with invulnerability on, I found stages like the X-Labs very ominous and too intense for me to ever turn cheats off. lol
Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix PC
112_sof2_ffaload.png This was my introduction to shooter culture. Dying from 2 or 3 bullets and respawning shortly after was a new thing. I eventually substituted this for Team Fortress 2. I didn't have a lot of patience for the single player missions, though it's moodiness sort of impressed me. My favorite mode was FFA deathmatch and that map with the helicopter pad on the office building roof.
Metroid Prime GC
112_metroidprime_lightbug.png Exploring the Chozo Ruins before Flaahgra was one of the most immersive gaming experiences I've had. I get nostalgic about scanning green acidic water, angry mushrooms, and wavy grass. The rest of the game was enjoyable as well, though I found myself gradually less engaged the closer I got to the end. I may not replay it, but wow, I thought this game would fail hard to match Super Metroid's atmosphere. I was wrong.
Paper Mario: TTYD GC
112_pmttyd.png The 3rd chapter was a masterpiece, but I think the N64 game is better. Mostly because TTYD's world was only connected by warp pipes, and lacked characters talking enough about other characters in the world. Otherwise this was almost exactly how I daydreamed the sequel of Paper Mario should be, so much so that I'm convinced I shared a hivemind with the scenario writers.
Silent Hill ePSXe
112_sh1_dog.png Played this on a PSX emulator after almost 4 years of knowing about the franchise, but only having heard the amazing soundtracks while anticipating getting to play one of the games someday. The start threw me off, but the alternate school delivered in every way. The lack of HUD helped establish realness to me. I never finished SH2, and still want to play SH3 sometime.
Silent Hill 4: The Room PS2
112_sh4_prison.png I heard this didn't become a Silent Hill game until mid-way through production. The panopticon level was my favorite. I haven't beaten the game (the PS2 was borrowed) but I got far enough to accumulate apartment hauntings, I just didn't know about the candles. I'm also nostalgic about it for a more personal reason I might link an explanation to later.
Fallout 3 PC
112_fallout3.png I play the role of a do gooder loner who always steals and sneaks around. I enjoyed the music on GNR; my favorite track being Rhythm For You which I associate with the Big Town quest at the police station. I turned off all the in-game music from the start, because I heard it wasn't as good as the isometric Fallout OSTs. The ambient sounds alone and having the radio off for serious quests just added to the experience.
Team Fortress 2 PC
112_tf2heavymedic.png Starting with my favorite classes, ending with my least favorite:
Engineer, Demoman, Scout, Soldier, Pyro, Spy, Heavy, Medic, Sniper.
My favorite game modes involve a Payload cart and capturing multiple CPs.
Stopped playing during the machine men update. Was never in it for the hats.
Pokemon White DeSmuME
112_pokemon_bw.png I thought the story and music was better than all the previous games. A lot of cool Pokemon were added to the meta-game in this one. This was my team through 90% of the main story. I liked that the elite four became stronger the second time around, and that some old Pokemon can be encountered after completing the main story. Unfortunately, I had no functioning White Forest or trading since I played it with an emulator on a laptop without WiFi settings.
