I joined the Game Maker Community forums late 2003, where you could download games created by other hobbyists for free. These are my favorites of the ones I've downloaded since then. Not all of these were made with Game Maker. The further down the list you go, the more recently I found the game, and the higher the likelihood I encountered it some place other than the GMC.

An old shockwave browser game that I found in my newgrounds & ebaumsworld days, remember it being terrifying, but beatable in under an hour. Like a streamlined HL1 without physics puzzles.

I thought it would be too hard to make a Metroid game with Game Maker, so one day I did a search to see
if anyone had tried it yet. The lack of polish despite fun bosses won me over immediately, and spurred
me on my journey to recreate Metroid for myself... about 7 times!

Very well crafted, equal parts challenging and scripted to scare. The borrowed concepts and music
didn't take away from the experience at all. Unfortunately the creator passed away.

Never played a game that looked this way at the time. There was something very appealing about my
first run through that almost completely dissappears when played a second time though...

An imperfect and more interesting Link to the Past. For me the appeal was it being simaltaniously polished and clunky, like the classics. For better or worse, this inspired me to make my own games just as polished.

I thought I was a badass to go ahead alone, but when the game mechanic finally made sense, I went back to find her again... didn't make it. The world needs more games like this, so I would highly recommend the other similiarily introspective games this person has created.

This game effected my in a very visceral and vaguely unpleasant way. The ending aroused the same feelings that
I used to have about World 8 of Super Mario Bros 3. I nearly beat the game, but was too drained from the experience to want to try again so soon, since it seemed enough just to know that I could have succeeded.

Clearly a labor of love. The storytelling is so engaging and connected with the gameplay and
level design with a consistancy other games never seem to do as well. The music is also great; the kind I intentionally seek out on YouTube every so often.

Another great story driven game that depends upon what you discover
by examining rooms and reading logs. The mood can be pretty lonesome and distressing. An emotional and unexpected ending that pays off.

Best enjoyed by not reading up on it before you actually play it. The unravelling of the gameplay is pretty original and inspiring. All the small touches add up to a very well crafted game that gets the mood just right.

The learning curve is a bit steep without watching a YouTube tutorial, but playing offline and online are equally interesting--the game randomly generates infinite block worlds to explore. The big feature is being able to craft tools and buildings from the resources you can gather. I usually play it while listening to a podcast or something. Minecraft is so popular now that it costs money (for multiplayer) and the creator is now a millionaire and celebrity (by indie standards).

Zombie Survival

gmod

Gameplay Footage 15 or so minutes through a typical round. 40+ players defend themselves from a small group of zombies. Some players start as zombies. Die and become a zombie. After 6 waves, all surviving humans win account points. All the maps are community made. Humans select a weapon set constrained by game start currency, giving one 90 secs before zombies spawn. Barracading is essential: People who choose a hammer nail props together and maintain their integrity, keeping coordinated zombies rushes back while others shoot from behind it.

Bought this game when Jonathan Blow (creator of Braid) kept tweeting "Why aren't game critics talking about this?!" I've been playing it two days since writing this sentence. I cannot figure out how to get 3 keys, or if there are even other levels. Update: It got really interesting once I found other characters, but then I totally dropped it, like 3 years ago.

Kept seeing fanart on my tumblr dash and a post on wizchan praising it. Sat through a few Let's Play and clips of all the boss battles. The only game listed here that I haven't actually played, but purchased none the less. That's how impressed I was. Excellent example of game machanics and story working together to stir the emotions of the player. Also a great example of deliberate pastiche and medium deconstruction.
